When everyone wants to pet a kangaroo or hug a koala, this chubby marsupial doesn’t receive the love it deserves…until now.
The wombat is a marsupial native to Australia, named by the aboriginal Darug people. There are three species, with the northern hairy-nosed wombat considered an endangered species. A little over a century ago they were regarded as vermin, and at one time even had a bounty on their heads. All three species are now protected by law.
You probably know quite a bit about kangaroos and koalas, but here are a few interesting wombat facts: A group of wombats is called a wisdom. Unlike other marsupials, the wombat’s pouch faces backwards which protects their babies (joeys) when burrowing. A wombat called Fatso was a pet on the Australian television show, A Country Practice. And finally, wombats can run at speeds up to 25 mph which is faster than Usain Bolt!
Now that you’ve discovered more about this adorable Australian animal, take a look at some wombat tattoos.
